Why was Sex painful tonight?

My boyfriend and I always have amazing sex, but tonight we didn't. We didn't do much foreplay which is normal but when he inserted his penis it felt very dry and painful. He added lubricant a few minutes later and we continued but the whole time it didn't feel good. It wasn't as painful but I didn't enjoy it at all and I have no clue why. Any suggestions?
